Taking steps to secure your belongings

Homes are always at risk of being burglarized, here are some tips to lessen that risk and keep your peace of mind:

• Replace all the locks in a new home that you have just moved into.
  
• Homes with high technolgy security systems are more prone to attracting a burglars that one with a simple padlock on the door.
  
• Be sure that your locks are always in good working order and check them regularly.
  
• Homes that are unoccupied for more than five hours a day are more prone to being burglarized.
  
• Consider getting time switches for some of the lights in the house to give the impression of being occupied.
  
• Do not leave keys anywhere obvious, better leave them with someone you know rather than on your property.
  
• If you have the tools and ladders around your property keep them locked away so a thief cannot use them to break in.
  
• Install security lighting.
  
• Join a local Neighbourhood Watch program.
  
• Be wary of unfamiliar people lurking in your neighboourhood.
  
• Never give any personal information or schedules over the phone to someone you do not know personally.
  
• Dogs are the best deterent for burglars, so get a big one!
